15 Minutes (2001 Film) [SOUNDTRACK]

Seeking to increase its hipness factor, the producers of the film 15 Minutes have loaded the soundtrack with dance and electronic music from the likes of bestselling DJs such as Moby and Prodigy. Thankfully, instead of the cynical marketing effort it was likely intended to be, it comes off sounding like a fairly coherent anthology of breakbeats and brooding techno that, while feeling a bit thrown together, still kicks out a pretty decent set. The Rob D. remix of Moby's "Porcelain," for instance, starts with that now overly familiar piano refrain, but then launches into an epic, scratched-up wash of keyboards and rhythm. The Icelandic dance collective Gus Gus provide a dose of inspiration via the distorted beats of "Gun," mixing it all up with a hint of vague, slightly sinister tension. David Holmes follows up, continuing down the rabbit hole with his Tom Waits-esque vaudeville spin on the darkly industrial track, "Out Run." Elsewhere, God Lives Underwater transform David Bowie's "Fame" into a slow-motion beat fiesta, and French house specialists Rinocerose put their typical six-string spin on display with "La Guitaristic House Organisation."

15 Minutes:

15 Minutes wants to be provocative, but it exists in an alternate reality where rules of logic and credibility no longer apply. In his underrated film 2 Days in the Valley, writer-director John Herzfeld wryly exposed the underbelly of California's San Fernando Valley, but in the artificial New York City of 15 Minutes, he attempts a timely mixture of satire and social commentary that's only marginally convincing. Herzfeld's premise is both vivid and valid in addressing the deterioration of morals in American mass media, but in exploring the dark side of fame, the last few minutes of Taxi Driver have more impact than this entire movie.Robert De Niro stars as Eddie Flemming, a hotshot homicide detective whose current double-murder case teams him with arson investigator Jordy Warsaw (Edward Burns). Their investigation leads to a pair of Eastern European nut-jobs (one Czech, one Russian) who've embarked on an impromptu killing spree--all captured on video by the Russian, who fancies himself an auteur of the American dream. In a pileup of contrivances, a reporter (Melina Kanakaredes) is also Eddie's girlfriend, and a tabloid TV host (Kelsey Grammer) seeks the killers' video with the scruples of Adolf Hitler. Blink and you'll miss Charlize Theron in a throwaway role, but that's nothing compared to the killing of a major character--a scene devoid of emotion that's more grist for the media mill. With appalling bloodlust, 15 Minutes sheds a sickening light on America's twisted character, but instead of illuminating, it only darkens the gloom.

Natalie Cole-GREATEST HITS

Natalie Cole made a nice greatest hits album 4 years ago. She selected a lot of good songs for this album, especially This Will Be and Our Love. I liked that she included Pink Cadillac, I Live For Your Love, Unforgettable and others. The songs tend to be more on the mellow side, especially on ballads like Say You Love Me. The new song that she did with Richard Marx is quite good. She's overcome a lot of past struggles to get herself right back on top in her career and this collection proves that. She's one of the more enduring singers still active to this day!

Natalie Cole:

Genre:  Adult Contemporary, Contemporary R&B, Quiet Storm, Rock/Pop, Soul/R&B
Hometown:  US
Natalie Cole started out as a R&B chart topper, got bogged down in Hollywood excess, and then pulled herself out by the bootstraps by visiting the same classic Jazz Pop vein as her legendary father, Nat "King" Cole. Lately, she's returned to the adult Soul fold infused with style and grace. Think Sade after an espresso or two.

Liza Minnelli-Liza's Back

Fresh from the glow of her new marriage, Liza Minnelli made a seven-night stand on Broadway in June 2002. Liza's Back is a triumphant return, with Minnelli sounding better than she has in years. Indeed, she sounds much better here than in her 1999 comeback, Minnelli on Minnelli, which was an exciting, deeply emotional tribute to her parents that found the singer in less than ideal form. But in this show created and produced by her new husband, David Gest, she sounds great in a Cabaret set and in a reprise of the best MoM song, "What Did I Have That I Don't Have." And she shines in a few of her other standards, especially "Some People" and "New York, New York." Of course, there are numerous references to her personal life and new material by Kander and Ebb, but there are also surprises: "Rose's Turn," an a cappella "I'll Be Seeing You," and a "Never Never Land" that closes with a bit of her mother's signature song, "Over the Rainbow." Minnelli tells her loving audience, "I will remember this my whole life.... I'm so honored and so happy that you came this evening." So were they.

Liza Minnelli:

Genre:  Cabaret, Pop Standards, Vocal
Hometown:  New York, NY, US
With her father's (the great director, Vincente Minnelli) facial features and her mother's (Judy Garland) brassy vocal delivery, Liza Minnelli has spent most of her career seeming like a performer lost in time. A major talent, she burst onto television, Broadway and film while still a teen in the late '60s. The links to her mother's famous "take no prisoners" vocal approach are more genetic than studied. Being a little sensitive to her connections, Minnelli at first avoided singing but couldn't hide her talent for long. She is no longer the Tony and Oscar winning Cabaret superstar she was in the 1970s, but she is still a vital stage performer, and her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys was a hit across Europe. With today's renewed interest in classic pop singing, she released her best album, Gently, a collection of standards featuring such jazz names as Herbie Hancock and Pete Jolly) in 1996. Sadly, she suffers from the same problems as her mother and she has become tabloid fodder of late, aging decades over a period of a few months.

Swordfish [SOUNDTRACK]
Paul Oakenfold's "Swordfish - The Album" is just a great cd.I've listened to Oakenfold before, and believe me, this is HIS BEST. Not that the other albums are bad, but he remarkably scored an A+ on this one. It's perfectly made.Bytes and bits converted into beats and rhythm make this album a must, whether you watched the movie or not. Dark Machine, The Word and Chase are great tunes to keep you up.

Paul Oakenfold:

Paul Oakenfold (born August 30, 1963) is a British DJ and record producer, known for his popularity among mainstream audiences. By the early 1980s, Oakenfold had managed Run D.M.C and the Beastie Boys. In 1987, Oakenfold and his friends, Trevor Fung and Ian St. Paul, began listening to club-music from Ibiza, Spain (see 1987 in music). Using influences from Ibiza's sound, Italian disco, soul and house. Oakenfold produced the Happy Mondays' Pills 'n' Thrills 'n' Bellyaches, followed by U2, Massive Attack, Arrested Development, the Cure, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Simply Red, New Order and the Shamen, many on Perfecto Records, his own label.Oakenfold was famous throughout Britain in the mid-1990s, but began to concentrate on building a US audience. However, he has only achieved modest mainstream success in the US. In 2002, Paul Oakenfold released the first solo album, called Bunkka featuring some artists like Nelly Furtado and the lead singer of Crazy Town.

Swordfish:

Cyberspace is a world protected by firewalls, passwords and the most advanced security systems. In this world we hide our deepest secrets, our most incriminating information, and of course, a whole lot of money. This is the world of Swordfish. Gabriel Shear, a charismatic and dangerous spy, needs to get inside this world. If he can get in, billions in illegal government funds wait for the taking. To actually steal the money, however, he'll need the help of Stanley Jobson, a former superhacker who's now desperate and penniless. Stanley has been forbidden to get within 50 yards of the nearest electronics store after doing time for wreaking havoc on the FBI's controversial high-tech cyber surveillance operations. Gabriel and his beautiful partner Ginger lure Stanley into their clandestine world, baiting him with the things he can't have - a chance to reunite with Holly, the daughter he lost during a bitter divorce battle and the opportunity to start a new life.

Music for the Movies of Clint Eastwood

There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

Clint Eastwood:

One of the world's biggest and most respected film stars and directors, Clint Eastwood's many blockbuster films include A Fistful of Dollars (1964), Dirty Harry (1971), Any Which Way You Can (1980), In the Line of Fire (1993), "The Bridges of Madison County" (1995), and Absolute Power (1997).
His 1992 Western Unforgiven earned him Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
